Diploma in Dental Technology
Major Skills Acquired Construction and design of complete dentures, removable partial dentures and orthodontic appliances, design and craftsmanship of fixed restorations using various materials, quality assurance processes, laboratory asepsis practices, laboratory management, and interpersonal and life skills.
Upon completion of the program the graduates are eligible to apply to the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta for Provincial registration upon successful completion of the provincial Practical Examinations. Cost approximately $800.00.
Upon graduation the provincial regulatory authority may require a security clearance check or a criminal records check prior registration and the issuance of a practice permit.
Graduates of the program are in demand. The need for skilled dental technicians is expected to continue as more private dental care plans are provided across the country. Program graduates are employed as junior technicians in dental laboratories owned by registered dental technicians and as technicians in private or group dental practices.
Dental Technology Graduates may be required to have post-graduate, supervised experience in denture construction, metal and porcelain bridgework, and tooth repositioning appliances. The period of internship will vary depending on the regulatory authority requirements to qualify for provincial registration examinations.
A registered Dental Laboratory Technician may own and operate a dental laboratory to provide services to a dentist, a number of dentists, or other qualified practitioners. Employed in the business may be other licensed dental technicians, student technicians, and on the job trained laboratory auxiliaries.
